BRYBC club president, 13 year old Gabriel Mapel, volunteered over 40 hours a week for the entire fall migration season and qualified as an official counter for the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch.  Gabriel was awarded the Hawk Migration Association of North American Appreciation Award at the Augusta Bird Club’s December Meeting.  Gabriel was recognized for his many hours of volunteer service at the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch where he became the youngest official hawk counter in North America.  Job well done Gabriel.  Congratulations!

Hi! My name is Max Nootbaar. I'm eleven years old and I love to draw. I've been drawing seriously for the past six years and I started birding eight months ago. When I heard about Gabriel and the young birders club that he wanted to form, I was so excited! When I was given the honor of drawing the logo, a Great Horned Owl, I was glad to bring together my old love of drawing and my new passion for birding. This is the second time I have had my artwork reproduced

Report by Gabriel Mapel:

At our first meeting in October, the four founding members of the BRYBC were to decide on a club bird, mascot, what ever you want to call it.  We came up with a list of possibilities and 20 or so birds were named.  Then we went down the list and if anyone didn't want that to be the club bird, we crossed it off our list.  We were down to three: Eastern Bluebird, Red-tailed Hawk, and Great Horned Owl.  We did a vote, and all four of us voted for the owl.  It was official, Great Horned Owl it was!  I want to give a big thanks to Max Nootbaar, who after the club bird was decided, drew a stunningly beautiful drawing of a perched GH Owl for our logo!  He brought it to our second meeting, in December, and we produced the logo on business cards, and many more things. His logo went viral! Great job, Max!
